This area is also famous as Macbeth Country, and the The Birnam Wood, made famous by the witches' prophesy in Shakespeare's MacBeth, is on the south bank of the River Tay.

On a stormy night the witches invoke evil spirits as they brew their magic potions. Macbeth arrives and asks them to prophesy his destiny. In response they conjure up three apparitions who, in turn, warn him to beware Macduff, that he need fear 'none born of woman', and that he will be invincible until Birnam Wood marches on his castle.

A pleasant riverside walk from the Atholl Arms Hotel towards Birnam takes visitors past the ancient Birnam Oak - thought to be the last survivor of the once vast oak forest which covered the whole area 1,000 years ago.
